For anyone who hasn't heard the news over the past week, the big story coming out of the Mayor's office is a "Fair Share Tax" on the privilege of obtaining a higher education in Pittsburgh. Mayor Ravenstahl has proposed taxing college students at a rate of 1% of their tuition. More information on the tax can be found on the Student Senate website at this link: http://stugov.andrew.cmu.edu/senate/news/2009/tuition-tax-feedback-wanted.html - we're trying to aggregate and post articles as they appear in local news sources.
For Carnegie Mellon students, this tax would be a $400 payment each year.

Student Senate is interested in hearing your feedback on Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's proposed 1% tax on college tuition, which would amount to a roughly $400 tax on Carnegie Mellon students, in order to better formulate an official position on the tax and better advocate for students.
Please send your feedback and views to student-senate@andrew.cmu.edu as soon as possible. You are also encouraged to attend this Thursday's Student Senate meeting at 5 PM in MM 103 (discussion of this issue will probably begin around 6 PM).
